WWF believes that weaving education for sustainable development (ESD) as a thread from early learning stage to higher education institution will maximize its impact to achieve a sustainable future. Through collaboration works with different stakeholders in the past years, our education programmes provide many opportunities for city dwellers in Hong Kong to get close encounter with nature. More importantly, people are educated to have better understanding about the nature, to acquire positive values and to enhance their engagement for a sustainable future.
WWF began to manage Mai Po Nature Reserve since 1984 and established the Mai Po Marshes Wildlife Education Centre in 1986. Our freshwater and wetland education programmes have reached and benefited more than 40,000 students and general public every year. Mai Po has been used not only to teach school students, but also as a platform for educators to share experience in organizing ESD programmes. WWF understands that educators are important to reaching all students in Hong Kong and they play crucial role in promoting ESD. Since 2001, Multiplier training has been identified as one of the major work in WWF Hong Kong’s education strategy. Numerous seminars and workshops have been conducted to enhance teachers’ and nature educators’ capacity in organizing ESD programme as well as for experience interflow. Education resource development is another vital work to provide idea and information for educators’ reference. Presently, out capacity building work not only focusing in Hong Kong but also extending to South China regions.
