Using Xixi National Wetland Park as a Model

This seminar is a practical exploration of the education potential of wetland parks in China focusing on China’s first National Wetland Park – Xixi Wetlands, in Hangzhou as an initial example. From discussing initial definitions of wetlands vs wetland parks we will go on to expound the concepts, goals and subsequent development of wetland education centers, education programs, and interpretation plans for such wetland parks in a China-context. Here we seek to mold all aspects of education into a medium that aims not simply to inform but to educate, to enthuse, to involve, to challenge and to change. The primary target groups for education are identified, namely the general public, middle schools, and university level research detailing very different approaches to these three target groups. The key topics of education are given namely ‘The Value of Wetlands’, ‘The Loss of Wetlands’,‘ China Wetland Conservation’,‘ Water Conservation’,‘ Wetlands of the World’,‘ The Specific Biodiversity of the Wetland Park’,‘ The Specific History of the Wetland Park’, ‘World Wetland History’ , ‘Water Quality Monitoring’, ‘Biological Organism Investigation Areas’ , ‘Demonstration Wetland Water Treatment Systems’ , ‘Dipping Ponds’ , ‘Integrated Interpretive Plans’ and , ‘Tours and Tour Guides’. Here Xixi is given as a model where we will attempt to demonstrate how such principles have been/are being applied in Xixi’s own education center and it’s education programs and activities. Advice is given regarding the potential setting up of such centers elsewhere in a China to maximize the potential and the impact and to avoid various pitfalls.

中国湿地公园的教育潜力探讨
--以西溪国家湿地公园为例

本文是一个聚焦于中国第一个国家湿地公园——杭州西溪湿地公园的中国湿地公园教育潜力的实践性探索。从湿地和湿地公园的最初定义讨论起,我们将阐述中国意义上湿地公园的含义、目的和湿地教育中心、教育项目及宣教计划的发展。在这里我们寻求将教育的所有方面塑为一个摸式,其目标不仅仅简单是一个形式,而是去教育、去热衷于、去参与、去挑战和去改变。在此主要教育对象被确认为一般公众、中学和大学的学生。在三个群体中其详细的工作方法有很大的不同。
我们给出的教育主题是“湿地的价值”、“湿地的丢失”、“中国湿地保护”、“水资源保护”、“世界的湿地类型” 、“湿地公园的特殊生物多样性” 、“世界湿地的历史” 、“水质监测”、“生物门类调查”、“湿地水处理系统示范” 、“池塘采样”、“完整解说计划”和“旅游指南”。西溪作为一个模式我们将尝试说明这些原理怎样被应用于本湿地教育中心及其教育计划和教育活动中。我们也将给出一些关于在中国其它地方设立类似教育中心的建议,以最大限度地发挥其潜力和影响,避免各种各样易犯的错误。
